Brrrrrrrrr. Winter Outlook 2023 (and early 2024!)
Winter fishing in Central Oregon presents unique challenges and opportunities. As temperatures drop, fish behavior changes, and anglers need to adapt their strategies. This guide covers what to expect during the winter months and how to make the most of your time on the water.
Water temperatures drop significantly during winter, slowing down fish metabolism. This means fish are less active and require more precise presentations. Slow, deliberate drifts with smaller flies often produce better results than aggressive techniques used in warmer months.
The Deschutes River remains fishable throughout much of the winter, with steelhead runs providing excellent opportunities. However, anglers should be prepared for cold conditions and shorter fishing windows. Early morning and late afternoon can be particularly productive.
Local reservoirs like Lake Billy Chinook offer year-round fishing opportunities, with trout and kokanee providing consistent action even during the coldest months. Ice fishing isn't common in Central Oregon, but the tailwaters below dams remain productive throughout the winter.
